Mutual Aid
Mutual aid is collective coordination to meet each other's needs. It has been done before capitalism and will continue until everyone's needs are met.
We live in a time of global capitalism, where commodities are produced primarily for individual exchange and meeting collective needs is an afterthought.
Mutual aid is all about organizing people to meet needs and survive in the here and now, the primary purpose is not to grow your stash of money-credit as it is in capitalism but solidarity towards something else.
Mutual aid is in-and-against capitalism. Only when needs are met, can we collectively change the underlying causes producing these conditions, but mutual aid itself is not enough.
Mutual aid differs from charity: support is given to people facing the most dire conditions and things are given away without expectations. Direct aid work is connected to other tactics aimed at root causes of oppression and exploitation and build towards broader solidarity.
Mutual aid is survival pending revolution:
-Meeting survival needs and building shared understanding about why we do not have what we need.
-Mobilizing people, expanding solidarity, and building movements.
-Participatory, solving problems through collective action.
This page is maintained by volunteers of The Rhizome House and will try to keep it updated as best we can as volunteers. We are not saviors but aim to have a space to connect people with mutual aid efforts. You can reach us at therhizomehouse@protonmail.com
You can also stop by the space and check out our needs and offers board for local mutual aid requests or offers.
