Communication Tips for Groups that Meet at RZH
Summary: We suggest groups that meet frequently at Rhizome House use Signal for secure communication but be aware of how direct messages are being used.
When new people are added to group chats, that person can view the group member list send a private direct message any member of that chat.
In one instance the same person has done this repeatedly with inappropriate and unwanted private direct messages. They have also solicited rides home from people they do not know and acted inappropriately towards them.
We can't totally prevent this from happening, but we do offer some suggestions here to minimize it from happening in the future. These are some suggestions we encourage groups at Rhizome to discuss and adopt when using Signal or other group chats. We welcome any feedback:
Suggestions:
-Have admin(s) on the signal group that can be the primary contacts for the group.
-Have a clear Signal group name and group description for the purpose of the group.
When new members are added to the Signal group:
-Explain the purpose of the Signal group to the new member.
-New members can contact an admin with any questions about the Signal group.
-Do not send individual direct messages to members that are not related to the purpose of the group.
-Do not send individual direct messages without prior consent from the other person.
-Respect boundaries. If a person does not want to engage with you do not continue to contact them.
-If you are receiving unwanted direct messages contact a group admin.
-Unwanted direct messages to members may result in removal group and further consequences as deemed necessary by the group.
If unwanted contact happens:
-Discuss with the affected group members and the rest of the group, discuss what consequences would make people feel safe.
-Have a group member that feels comfortable discuss the consequences with the person that sent the message. Resources and steps towards accountability are offered.
-Let a Rhizome House collective member know of the situation so other groups can be aware.
